When You Need Extra Time to Heal
Some patients need extra time to recuperate from an illness or injury before returning home and resuming daily tasks. Gibson General Hospital's Swing Bed Program allows patients to get the additional nursing care and therapy needed while staying close to home.
What is a "Swing Bed"?
Swing Bed is a clinical term to describe a type of patient who receives skilled nursing care and rehabilitation care while staying in the hospital. The patient "swings" between different levels of care while remaining in the same physical hospital bed.
Only critical access hospitals like Gibson General are allowed to offer a swing bed program, and a patient can be admitted to the program from any hospital in any state or county. It's one way the government helps small community hospitals keep medical services close to home.
